Dear Friend,
I would like to invite you to join the Women’s Bureau Director, Sara Manzano-Díaz for a half-day conference on intergenerational leadership for women on Friday, May 21 in Chicago. The event, “Women Working Together-Writing the Next Chapter of Herstory!” will provide a mentoring and networking opportunity for women of diverse backgrounds to share their experiences and views and to learn from one another.
Appointed by President Obama, Director Manzano-Díaz’s vision for the Bureau is to empower working women nationwide to achieve economic security. The Women’s Bureau was created by Congress in 1920, the same year women were granted the right to vote. It is the only federal agency exclusively mandated to serve and promote the interests of working women.
With the passing of the legendary civil rights leader Dr. Dorothy Height recently, it is a reminder that many women have impacted on the civil rights movement and women's rights movement. There are women in the Chicago area who have broken barriers and made it possible for younger women to receive higher education and better career opportunities than their mothers could have ever dreamed.
This conference is to honor and to celebrate the legacy of these accomplished women and to encourage more intergenerational dialogue and mentorship. Invited speakers include Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, Reverend Willie Barrow, Chairwoman of the Rainbow Push Coalition; Lisa Madigan, Illinois Attorney General; Tammy Duckworth, Assistant Secretary of the U.S Department of Veterans Affairs; and Mellody Hobson, President of Ariel Investments.
In addition, we ask that you bring a young woman, between the ages of 14-22 to the event with you. Participants will be engaged in roundtable discussions to share their experiences and perspectives.
