Martin Luther King, Jr. said, "Life's most persistent and urgent question is: what are you doing for others?" Each year, the Corporation for National and Community Service honors Dr. King's legacy by asking Americans to make the King Holiday a national day of service.
On Saturday, January 16, 2010, NAAAP Chicago assembled thirty NAAAP members at Union Station alongside approximately 3000 volunteers to join the annual Celebration of Service in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr sponsored by Target and Chicago Cares. ‘’Their service will strengthen our city, introduce them to new ideas and people and make a difference for seniors, children, adults with disabilities and many other Chicagoans’’. City of Chicago Mayor Daley and Illinois Governor Pat Quinn presided over the morning ceremony to kick off the day’s events consisting of 42 projects taking place across Chicago.
Members from NAAAP Chicago, Motorola, Deloitte and AON participated in five projects held at Bouchet Math and Science Academy on the South Side. This school was named in honor of the first African-American to graduate from Yale. In addition, this was also the primary school that Michelle Obama graduated from.
The projects at this school included painting the lunch room, creating an image out of dominoes, cleaning and organizing the library, painting various murals, building architectural benches and creating a mozaic art piece.
‘’It was fun to meet new people and participate in a meaningful and worthwhile project. I will definitely participate next year and encourage others to do so’’ commented Charouay Messing, Community Service Co-Chair.
