The year of the ox is looking good! Thanks to all your support, the 2009 NAAAP Lunar New Year Celebration was a tremendous success with initial estimates of roughly 250 attendees that night!! Far larger than the 140 estimate we had going into this event!
Attendees enjoyed mingling with members from the Chinese American Bar Association, Chinese American Service League, Korean American Bar Associaiton, Korean American Bar Association as well as NAAAP members. Attendees also enjoyed learning about different elements of Lunar New Year throughout many Asian cultures and participated in an interactive raffle drawing that infused elements of the popular Vietnamese New Year (Tet) game, Bau Cua Ca Cop while enjoyed great tunes from DJ Andy Olinski and great food from Vietnam Bistro.
Thank you to CABA, CASL, KABA and KACS for bringing all their members as well. This event was not just a fun event for everyone; the value of purely networking with great people in the Asian American professional scene in Chicago is one that should not be taken for granted. It is also important to learn about and embrace our cultural backgrounds. As we all move ahead in our careers it is vital to understand what makes us act and think the way we do and how we interact with people from different cultures. As Ronald Takaki, famous author and historian of Asian American history, once said, “How do we free ourselves from the past, if we do not even know this past?”
